Generac generator code 2100
Medium severity — The generator's current sensors detected a load draw beyond what the unit is rated to supply, and the controller shut it down or blocked a restart under load to protect the alternator.
Applies to: Guardian/Protector series standby generators with an Evolution or Nexus controller and current-transformer (CT) overload sensing
What it means
Code 2100 isn't really an engine problem at all — it's Generac's version of a circuit breaker tripping, just measured by the generator's own current-transformer sensors instead of a physical breaker snapping open. Whenever the home is drawing more amperage than the unit's alternator is rated to deliver, the controller intervenes rather than letting the alternator overheat or the engine bog down trying to keep up.
The generator's current sensors detected a load draw beyond what the unit is rated to supply, and the controller shut it down or blocked a restart under load to protect the alternator.
This is one of the few Generac faults that's often about the house's demand rather than the generator's health, which is why the first troubleshooting move is almost always to reduce what's asking for power, not to inspect the machine itself.
Most common causes
Usually it's a demand issue, occasionally a wiring one:
- Too many high-draw circuits transferred at once, especially with an automatic transfer switch not configured for load management
- A large motor (well pump, central AC, air compressor) starting under load
- A short circuit or ground fault on a connected branch circuit
- Managed transfer switch load-shed settings misconfigured for the home's actual demand
What you can check yourself
This is one of the more homeowner-friendly faults on this list to work through:
- Manually shed some circuits at the transfer switch or main panel before clearing the fault
- If using a manual load-management strategy, stagger large appliances instead of running them simultaneously
- Clear the fault at the controller and restart with a reduced load
