Generac generator code Charger Warning
Low severity — The built-in battery charger reported that battery voltage was still below about 12.5V at the end of an 18-hour charge cycle, meaning the charger isn't keeping the starting battery topped off.
Applies to: Guardian/Protector series standby generators with an Evolution or Nexus controller
What it means
Charger Warning looks similar to Generac's Low Battery alert, but it's diagnosing a different part of the system: not the battery's charge level in the moment, but whether the built-in charger is doing its job at all over time. The controller runs an 18-hour charge cycle in the background and checks the result — if the battery still isn't reading a healthy voltage by the end of that window, something in the charging path is falling short, and the message appears.
The built-in battery charger reported that battery voltage was still below about 12.5V at the end of an 18-hour charge cycle, meaning the charger isn't keeping the starting battery topped off.
Because it's evaluated over 18 hours rather than in real time, a Charger Warning tends to persist until someone intervenes — it won't clear itself the way the non-latching Low Battery warning sometimes does.
Most common causes
Four places worth ruling out, from simplest to most involved:
- Battery reaching end of life and no longer able to hold a charge
- Blown charger fuse or tripped internal breaker
- Charger circuit board failure
- Loose battery connections preventing charge from reaching the battery
What you can check yourself
Nothing here needs more than a wrench and a multimeter:
- Check and tighten battery terminal connections
- Look for a small blown fuse associated with the charger circuit inside the control panel
- Test the battery itself — if it's more than 3–4 years old, it may simply need replacing
