Low Battery or Charger Fault
Of everything that can go wrong with a standby generator, a weak starting battery is by far the most common — and the built-in charger meant to prevent it is its own separate point of failure. This is usually a warning, not a shutdown: the generator keeps running or stays in standby, but the next start attempt is at risk.
What this looks like
Unlike an overcrank or overspeed fault, this one is quiet by design. The controller is continuously watching starting-battery voltage, and when it drops below a threshold for long enough — about 12.1V for roughly 60 seconds on a Generac Evolution/Nexus system, about 12.5 VDC for 90 seconds on a Kohler RDC2/DC2 — it posts a warning rather than shutting anything down. Generac shows this as a plain Low Battery message, and separately, if its built-in charger still hasn't brought the battery to about 12.5V after a full 18-hour charge cycle, a distinct Charger Warning. Kohler's equivalent is Battery Voltage Low. Briggs & Stratton's Home Generator System reports the same underlying problem as a single LED blink, decoded as FC_1. Because these are warnings and not shutdowns, they're easy to miss for weeks until the generator actually needs to crank during a real outage and can't.

- Battery reaching normal end of life. Standby generator starting batteries typically last only 2–4 years thanks to constant outdoor temperature swings and the drain of weekly exercise cycles — this is the default explanation once a battery is a few years old.
- Loose, corroded, or disconnected battery cables. Outdoor terminals corrode faster than most people expect, and a connection that's merely loose can mimic a dying battery.
- Built-in charger (trickle charger) failure or a blown charger fuse. The small onboard charger is a separate circuit from the battery itself and fails independently of it.
- Extended outage or extreme cold reducing effective capacity. A battery that's otherwise fine can read low simply because it's been working hard through a long outage or sitting in freezing temperatures, which cuts usable capacity.
- Parasitic drain from a wiring fault. Less common, but a short or a component pulling current when it shouldn't will slowly bleed a battery even with a working charger.

What you can check yourself
- Inspect the battery terminals for corrosion (a white or greenish crust) and tighten any connection that moves by hand.
- Test resting battery voltage with a multimeter — under about 12.4V generally means the battery needs charging or replacing, regardless of which exact warning fired.
- Confirm the small built-in charger is lit or otherwise showing active, and check whether it has its own accessible fuse that might have blown.
- If the battery is more than 3–4 years old, treat replacement as the default first step rather than troubleshooting further — it's the single most common standby-generator fix for a reason.
- Clear the warning at the controller once voltage tests normal, and note whether it returns within a day or two, which points back at the charger rather than the battery.
